Plane Wreck Rat

This gallery contains 2 photos.

This is my first update to my rat game concept , which I have named ” Plane Wreck Rat” for now. The first thing to highlight is the game has been dated to a modern era and my first idea of a ship wreck has been updated to a plane. This opened the doors [...]

Rat game in the making

Gallery

This gallery contains 3 photos.

I started two days ago with an idea to make a game which features a rat as the main character. Before I gave any further thought to the game I had to start the modeling process of the lead character. So after obtaining a few reference images from google including a skeleton reference I was [...]

Sheep Dash Version 2

I spent several hours over the last week getting my 3D version of sheep dash close to a final release state. The list of things updated and added is extremely long so I think I will just mention some key points out of this development time namely :

1. Created a short country banjo and cowbell intro jingle with splash page.

2. Rendered a animation sequence for the splash page , using Blender IPO Curves and shape keys.

3. Added audio effects and loops , I found a great open source audio clips site - http://www.freesound.org/ , of which I used three outdoor ambient recordings to create a short  custom mix using Audacity. I read you have to give mention to the authors of these files if you use them.

4. Made full use of iTween engine for most animation and audio effects. Although I found There latest release had some performance issues compared to an older version I had on my drive , so I have created a ticket on their wiki to outline my findings.

So the Game is close to finished , I did some reading up again at Kongregate so I can implement their API to increase revenues once deployed. Its been a fun time and I’m happy with the results of this week.

Pygmy Forest 3rd person

Pygmy Forest Game

I have moved the concept of Pygmy Forest from 2.5d to full 3d controls so I can sink my teeth into developing a good 3rd person script. To start off, I tweaked the standard 3rd person controller but it is still very basic. I then resorted to look into getting more educated on the entire process a bit more and found a wonderful resource online  for a 3rd person controller been built from the ground up on 3DBuzz Theses guys had a really good bash at an object culling system and after trying several ideas they came upon the most functional system I has yet seen : via projecting rays from the player to the four corners of the camera frustum and one behind the player, a really neat idea I’m going to add into my script. I built a new terrain and updated some vegetation for my test, here is the link to my file and button instructions :

• Hold shift to run.

• “z” key to jump

• Alt to quickly swing camera to behind the character

Pygmy Forest 2.5D

pigmy forest 2-5D

This was my project to test my humanoid model and bear character. I had an idea to have some of the vegetation with eye balls , so I started by creating two creatures : a green leaved shrub and a mushroom.  I also created all the vegetation and trees to give it a unique look. I felt that the hair seemed very static so I experimented creating a mesh modifier to animate vertices at runtime. It made a huge difference and I will continue to develop on this idea , so this was the first edition.

I feel I’m getting closer to the point of finally creating an actual game in Unity3D soon. Most of my projects to date have no gaming elements to them as my focus has been on learning to put everything together from a technical point of view. Here is the link and button instructions :

Jaguar

This gallery contains 3 photos.

My next 3D Modeling ambition was a Jaguar. With this project I took a slightly different route in regards to polygons , I started out doing a more dense mesh and used a script in Blender to do the poly reduction. I think this is more of a common practice in the industry and I [...]

Bear

bear 1

I decided to do a bear as another character in my PygmyForest game. This model proved to be problematic when animating with nasty creases occurring . The default pose was in an upright stance and I had problems when deforming into a walk animation on all four legs. Perhaps the poly count is simply to low to accommodate extreme changes in the pose , I need to do some more experimentation and research to get this problem sorted out. Vertice count is 1138 and faces 1118. So for now I am only using one animation of the bear standing at a beehive eating some honey. This was the first time where I used a real life photo of a bears face to create the UV Map.

Sheep Dash

UPDATE : This game has been updated – read about it here

This no brainer game is based on a old flash game that simply tests your reaction speed darting sheep to sleep. The graphics in the original game were very simple so I decided to put a 3d spin on it and create my own sheep farm scene. I have not polished it off yet for production, so its still very rough around the edges but generally most of it is there. I aim to have it on a gaming portal such as Kongregate some day when I get around to working on it some more. Here is the link :

Pygmy Character

pygmy wireframe

My next 3d Model challenge was a human head. I already had some experience with humanoid structures when building some of my other characters but had not modeled a human head and face. I did a study again into the topology theories for the poles. Starting in this manner I would learn how to do it properly off the bat. Once my head was complete I added a body and then stylized it for my very own pygmy character. For this,  the head , feet and hands had to be enlarged. Target deployment once again was for gaming engines so I had to keep it as low poly as possible. I managed 2274 vertices 2489 faces. Fully rigged and animated with a few seams as possible in the UV map , my character was ready to go into Unity3d.

Jock of the bushveld Unity3D

jock of the bushveld Unity3d

This is the prototype I put together for jock. There are no game play elements , It’s just a software toy – look and feel plus movement. I created a new idea for the side scrolling game play which uses a way point system to move the character in a non linear fashion within the 3d world while maintaining a sidescoll view and controls. Here is the link and button instructions.
